Join the Edmonton Calligraphic Society for an introduction to the art of ‘beautiful writing’ with our beginner-friendly workshop. Calligraphy 101 is a great overview for those wanting to try calligraphy or are thinking about becoming part of the ECS.

What We’ll Be Learning

Start your calligraphy journey with this welcoming introduction including:

• A presentation of the historical development of Western calligraphy

• Standard calligraphy terminology

• Calligraphy tips and demonstrations of various tools

• Information about different types of lettering fluids

• Nib and paper preparation

• Pilot Parallel Pen use and maintenance

• An opportunity to test pens, nibs, inks, and papers to learn how they work together (or not!). You will take your samples home in a little package for future reference.

This session is perfect for absolute beginners and anyone wanting a friendly refresher. 

 

What to Bring

• Notebook and pen/pencil. 

• Bring your lunch and a water bottle so you can eat during the break, or you can visit a local restaurant. 

 

Instructor

Gail Fournier is a long-time ECS member and experienced calligrapher known for her patient teaching style and love of letterforms. She brings a warm, encouraging approach to beginners and enjoys helping students discover the joy of beautiful writing as they begin their calligraphy journey. 

 

Registration

Members / General Public: This workshop has been designed for both members and non-members. The fee for this class is $20.00 and is not included as part of the yearly membership. To register, click the link below.

• This is a scent‑free event to ensure comfort for all participants.
