Welcome Back, Letter Lovers — Our 2026–2027 Season Begins!

We’re excited to kick off a brand‑new year with the Edmonton Calligraphic Society, and we’d love to see you at our first member meeting of the season! After a summer of rest, travel, and whatever creative paths you followed this summer, this is our chance to gather again, reconnect with familiar faces, and welcome new ones into our community.

What We’ll Be Learning

We’re kicking off the 2026–2027 season with the beautiful historic hand, Uncial. Nancy will guide us through the classic letter forms that make this script so timeless. Whether you’re brand‑new to calligraphy or returning after the summer break, this session is a welcoming way to ease back into lettering.

This script has only 26 letter forms to master as there are no upper and lower case letters, making it the perfect style for beginners to learn. Nancy will explain some of the origins of Uncial and show us a few examples from centuries past, as well as contemporary usage. Full of inspiration, we’ll then put pen to paper.

You’ll leave with a solid understanding of the foundational strokes to continue exploring at home.

What to Bring

• Calligrapher's Tool Kit 

• A broad‑edge pen (3.8 mm or similar) - such as a Pilot Parallel Pen

• Ink (or cartridges for the Pilot Parallel Pen)

• Basic supplies will be available for those who need them.

Instructor

Nancy Hannemann is a long‑time ECS member and skilled calligrapher known for her thoughtful teaching style. She brings a warm, encouraging approach to her instruction.

Registration

Members: This meeting is included in your ECS membership. 

Non‑Members: The drop‑in fee is $10. Register online to reserve your spot. If you’ve been thinking about joining ECS, this is a perfect chance to try a session and meet our community.
